Women’s March

The Women’s March on Washington is happening on January 21, 2017 and to celebrate, people are knitting, crocheting, and sewing pink, cat inspired hats, affectionately known as Pussy Hats (read more about the #pussyhatproject here). Since I don’t knit or crochet (yet!), I thought getting a sewing tutorial would be a great way to include the fabric obsessed. It’s ridiculously simple and pretty cheap (especially if you catch a sale at Joann’s [pro tip: check the remnant bin first!])

I’ve dedicated my time and effort to making these quick and easy little hats for the protesters of the march and implore you to do the same. You don’t have to send it out, wearing it around town can be your own form of support and a great way to spark conversations with people about issues that affect over half the population.

Whipping up a batch of these takes no time, and you feel like a rockstar with how much you’ve accomplished!

Supplies:

1/2yd of pink fleece (you can get away with less if you do your measurements first)

Rotary cutter and mat

Sewing machine

Now, let’s get this party started!

Instructions:

Measure your noggin about where you want the hat to sit.  Now divide that number in half and add one. In my instance, the circumference is 22″ around, so halving it and adding 1″ = 12″. That is your width.

To find your length, measure from the center of your forehead to the very bottom of the back of your head, past that little bump almost to the back of your neck. Now, add 2.5″ for seam allowance. Again, for me, that was 16″ + 2.5″ = 18.5″.

*If you like to cuff your hat, make it a few inches longer. Note: it’s not supposed to be slouchy as the tightness of the hat is what creates the ‘ears’.

Cut your fleece to your desired size.

Fold in half, matching corners.

Sew 1/4″ seam on each side.

Fold over 1 1/4″ and finish hat with a 1″ hem. This step isn’t terribly necessary as fleece doesn’t need to be hemmed, it won’t unravel or anything. To give it a finished edge, though, you’ll want to hem it.

Flip it right side out, and voila! You are done!

No go wear your Pussy Hat proudly in support of Women’s Rights!

What WOMEN’S issue do you feel passionately about? What will you be wearing your hat in reference to?

Thanks for the instructions! Saw a version of this where the corners of the ears were sewn in, to emphasize their shape. Very cool!

I need to make one to march in. I’ll be in LA marching because I can no longer sit idle when so many, including myself feel fearful. My rights matter as much as anyone’s.

Thanks, as I don’t knit, and have not seen a crochet pattern.

Perfection! I was honestly wondering if everyone would have knitted hats. This, I could do!

I know! And it’s SO easy, so making a few extra for friends or other protesters is a SNAP!
