The Neverending Search
Y’know how I talked about my goals for 2017, and one of them was to FOCUS? Well, what better way to stay on track than with a planner! Seems pretty obvious, but I can be a little slow on the uptake sometimes. So I set out to find the most perfect, bestest, awesomest planner I could find. Easy peasy, right?
I wanted a planner that was beautiful, versatile, and durable. I searched Amazon, Etsy, asked for recommendations, stalked my favorite designers for just the right one. While I found some amazing inspiration, none quite held my attention for very long. Some were gorgeous but boring, some were functional but stark, others were bound (the horror!), still others were much too small for this messy life.
I started worrying that I wouldn’t find the right one, that my attempts to stay organized would be in vain. I searched back to what had worked for me in the past, and remembered what I used in 2016: The Quilter’s Planner!
I had used the Quilter’s Planner in 2016, and while I loved it, I didn’t quite keep up with it. I thought about it and did some soul searching as to why I fell out of the habit, and realized that my reasons weren’t the planners’ fault! I pretty much haven’t kept up with anything since then (I’m working on that, ok?)! So I gave it another try, made a promise to myself to actively take charge of using it, and I couldn’t be happier.
First, let me preface this by saying, I did NOT get paid in any way to write this post. I bought the planner with my own money because supporting artists and small businesses is neat. I highly recommend it. That said: Why is this planner so rad? Let me count the ways!
For starters, I prefer bigger planners with spiral bound pages because I have a LOT of shit going on and 2 (almost 3!) small kids to keep up with. Having a planner that is big enough to hold all of the minutiae of running multiple businesses and events, getting kids to their doctor’s appointments, figuring out what to make for dinner, etc. was essential. This planner is on the larger side at 10″x9″ (including the spiral binding), but not overwhelming.
It has a glossy laminated cover that can put up with a TON of abuse (including any stickers lil’ Bean sneaks onto it). Pro tip: get a set of dry erase markers and the inside cover automatically becomes a quick place to jot notes, phone numbers, or things to put in your planner for later. I don’t know about you, but my thoughts come and go so quickly I’m onto the next one before I’ve had a chance to process the last one. A place to quickly write random musings is ideal or there they go – bye, bye! Plus, I don’t ruin the aesthetic of accidentally writing something in the wrong color pen (again, the horror!).
Not only does The Quilters’ Planner have a place for daily and weekly to-do’s, but there are is ample space in the monthly layout for all your projects.
Can we talk about the extras?! There is a quilt block every week designed by a fellow quilter, so by the end of the year, you can have a beautiful Quilter’s Planner sampler! There’s also different (but easy!) free motion quilting techniques to practice with wonderful words of encouragement and motivation.
Head to the back of the planner, and you’ll see that there are FOURTEEN (yes, 14!) quilt and project patterns that come with it. Just because. That’s it. Because The Late Night Quilter and frands love you and want you to be happy. They range from quick sews to more detailed construction, but there is something for every quilter.
I’m a swap-a-holic, and, not going to lie, sometimes I run a little late on deadlines. And then I’m that asshole that makes a mad scramble to get my craft out on time. If only I had all that info in one spot! Oh, but there is such a magical place! There’s a whole spread devoted to bee-blocks and swaps. Now there are no excuses for being late (unless your cat dies or you have a kid or something. Ok, I guess there are some excuses for being late, but at least not because you didn’t know the deadline). On top of that, there are project and quilt planners and even places to sketch them out in! Seriously, they thought of everything.
Lastly, there’s a reference area with handy cutting estimates, half square triangles (we all know how much I love HST’s!), and quick, no-waste flying geese. And there’s a Cloud 9 Cirrus Solids color chart to help you pick juuuuuuuust the right color for your design.
But I think the thing that is most invaluable about this keeper of important shit, is the community. If you go on Instagram, there’s post after post about how people use this planner to better their lives. Plus, there are monthly contests, and daily challenges to keep you motivated throughout the year. I love seeing everyone’s different take on how they incorporate it into their lives. It really is a wonderful place to get ideas, inspiration, or just look through pretty things.
All in all, it’s an incredibly well thought out and brilliantly executed planner for the modern quilter. I look forward to using it everyday and following along on others’ journeys too! My goal is to make 2017 my best year yet, and I know I can rely on my Quilter’s Planner to help me through!
